CalMAN Release Notes

CalMAN 4.0 Release Notes
Release Date:  July 12, 2010

Version 4 is a complete rewrite of CalMAN.   Low-level device support code has been preserved from Version 3, but everything else is new.  The notes below provide only a summary overview of the major changes.  For additional detail, see the help documentation inside CalMAN v4.

User Interface
CalMAN v4 sports an entirely redesigned user interface, based on Windows Presentation Foundation.    Graphics design is consistent throughout, and has been optimized for calibration in a dark environment.

Properties Page for All Screen Objects
All objects on the screen -- charts, tools, text boxes, action buttons, etc. – now have Properties pages accessible via a right click context menu.  From the Properties page you can control the object’s function and appearance.  For example, you can change any chart from a bar chart to a line chart and back, change the Delta E formula, break luminance out into its RGB components, make a vertical chart horizontal, or whatever other option might be appropriate.

Selectable Datasets
The Properties page for objects that reference data allows you to specify which dataset should be used.  For example, rather than displaying data from the current calibration run, the chart can show data from the Pre-Calibration capture.

Workflow-Centric Design
CalMAN has always emphasized workflows, but CalMAN v4 is completely designed around workflows.  Rather than a hard-coded set of “User Experience Modes” selected at the beginning, you can now have as many workflows as you want.

Self-Contained Workflows
In previous versions of CalMAN, sharing workflows with other users required many other files which needed to be copied into several separate directories.  CalMAN v4 workflows are essentially free-standing; if you put the workflow file in the Workflows directory, it should just work.

Workflow Scaling
Workflows you design on your desktop will now automatically scale to fit on your netbook.

Simplified Startup
After you’ve selected your hardware and configured CalMAN once, you don’t have to do it again.  Next time you start up, CalMAN will remember which meter you were using, which Workflow you wanted, etc.

Meter Profiling
CalMAN’s Meter Profile feature has been redesigned to make profiling much easier and faster.  Meter profiling is now so quick and simple that SpectraCal recommends profiling colorimeters every time they are used.

Direct Device Control
CalMAN v4 can directly communicate with several video processors and displays, and, interacting with them, create “closed loop” calibrations:   CalMAN requests a change from the device, reads from a meter to measure the results of the change, calculates what further change is necessary to achieve the goal, requests the further change, measures again, etc.

Interactive Charts
You control CalMAN’s interactions with video processors and displays by means of Interactive Charts.  For example, you adjust the level of Blue relative to Red and Green by moving the Blue bar on an RGB Balance Chart.  You adjust the x,y definition of a color by moving a dot on a CIE chart to where you want it to be.

Performance Improvements
The completely new I/O engine in CalMAN v4 is many times faster than the I/O engine in CalMAN 3.x (or any other software controlling the same hardware).  A grayscale run that may previously have required two minutes, for example, will probably now finish in under 30 seconds.

Multi-Threading
The new I/O engine in CalMAN v4 is completely multi-threaded.  You can perform any number of device operations simultaneously.  For example, you can easily be reading from multiple meters at the same time, while also using the other objects on the screen.

Device Support
Support has been added for many new meters, sources, and interactive devices, including:

HP Dreamcolor (Display2 OEM)
Jeti SB1201
Jeti SB1211
Orb SP200
Photo Research PR701

Known Limitations
CalMAN reports may be printed to paper or saved as Microsoft XPS documents.   Previous versions of CalMAN contained a built-in facility to export to PDF.  If you prefer to save PDF rather than XPS documents, SpectraCal recommends a separate utility such as PrimoPDF (which is free).

Upgrading to V4
Version 4 does not replace previous versions of CalMAN.  You can continue to run v4 and v3 side-by-side.  Version 4 does require a new license key, which can be obtained from the download page on the SpectraCal web site.

CalMAN v3.5.1
October 7, 2009

New Features in v3.5.1

Reports vs. Layouts:  Printing and PDFs
In version 3.5.1, you can specify when you save a layout whether it is a Workflow Layout or a Formatted Report.  If you save as a Report, print-outs or PDFs will be paginated exactly as you have specified.  If you save as a Layout, print-outs or PDFs will be scaled to fit on a single page.  When you print out CalMAN’s built-in layouts, they will also be scaled to fit on a single page.

Default Session
In the Select Calibration Session page, when you create a new user, CalMAN now automatically creates a default Session.

Larger Meter Control Buttons
The First, Last, Next, and Previous buttons have been eliminated from the Meter Controls, giving room to enlarge the Read, Read All, Read Continuous, and Stop buttons.  Clearer images have been added to the new buttons.

Returning to the Calibration Session page from the Customer Record Editor
A new button has been added to the Customer Record Editor which takes you back to the Select Calibration Session page.

Hardware support

·         Added support for the CalMAN Enhanced Chroma 5 with LED tables.  .

·        Added support for the CalMAN Enhanced Klein K-10 with greater precision and LED tables.

Charts

·       Brightness and Contrast charts, by popular demand, no longer change scale as you get closer to the target values.  The charts now only change scale when the target value changes.  When no target has been established -- that is, before a full run is completed -- the measured value is not shown.  When the measured value is higher than the target value, the measured bar turns red.

Issues resolved

·        CalMAN 3.5 would allow you to attempt to start multiple instances of CalMAN.  In 3.5.1, an attempt to start a second instance will bring up the original instance.

·        An unhandled exception that could sometimes occur when clearing data has been resolved.

·        In previous versions, the Next button was sometimes grayed out on the Select Calibration Session page, even when all required fields had been completed.  Now the Next button is properly enabled.

Known upgrade issue in 3.5.1

If you upgrade directly from Version 3.3, CalMAN may not notice that the default location of user data files has changed.  The new version will use a new default location, and you will not see any CDF files you previously saved.  You will also see an empty customer database.  You can resolve this problem by copying all files from the former location into the current location, or by setting CalMAN to use the former location.  (Use the Options page under Preferences to set the user database location.)  Please call or write us for assistance if this presents any difficulty.

CalMAN v3.5 Release Notes
August 31, 2009

New Features in v3.5

Workflows
One of the most powerful aspects of CalMAN is that you can completely customize it.   Using CalMAN's design mode, you can change any screen, move charts and grids, resize them, delete some, add others, or even make up your own layouts from scratch.  What you have not been easily able to do until now is to put together collections of layouts.  To say, "Whenever I start a calibration, I want to see these six screens in this order."  Now you can.  This feature is called a Workflow in CalMAN 3.5.   You can bundle your layouts together, arrange them in the order you want, name the tabs, and save them all as one Workflow.  Then you can restore the whole workflow at once, or, even more powerfully, set the Workflow as the default, so that it just comes up the way you want whenever you enter CalMAN.

Custom Mode
CalMAN offers several User Experiences -- QuickView, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Design -- each providing a different set of features.  Custom Mode allows you to create your own user experience, with just what you want to see.

LED Calibration
Many exciting new displays are coming onto the market based on LED technology.  Calibrating these displays with current color sensors can give erroneous results.  Meter manufacturers are just beginning to add extra calibration tables to their colorimeters.  (The Klein K-10 is the first meter so far to have a dedicated LED table.)  CalMAN 3.5 already has support for dedicated LED modes.

Hardware support

·       Updated support for the Konica Minolta CS-2000.

·       Added support for the Photo Research ColorMate.

·       Added Low Light Handling for Photo Research meters.

·       Added Oppo BDP-83 IR codes.

·       Improved support for Lumagen Radiance.

·       Improved support for the VP-403 in ATSC mode.

Charts

·      New forms of the DeltaL, DeltaC, and DeltaH charts have been added that reflect the current reading.  If you're looking at Red, they show you the DeltaL, C, and H for Red.  When you move to Green, the chart shows the Green results.

·      Chart colors have been revised to make Target and Measured data clearer and more consistent.

Minor improvements

·     The Meter Select page now make it easier to upgrade a Spyder3 colorimeter to a CalMAN Enhanced Spyder3.

·       CalMAN Datafields have been enhanced so that they can now be used in Pre and Post reports.

·       Serial ports greater than 32 are now supported.

·       The list of customers now appears sorted (in alphabetical order) on the Select Session page and in the Customer Record Editor.

·       New Action Objects allow you to navigate to the Next Tab or Previous Tab

·       Luminance reference defaults have been changed from 100 to 75.

·       Layouts have been optimized for Netbooks and other devices with 1280 x 800 screens.

·       You can now re-order the rows in a User Data Grid.

·       The Meter Refresh page now only asks you about applicable meters.

Issues Resolved

CalMAN v3.5 resolves the following issue reported with the release of Version 3.4 or previous releases:

Chinese XP - Resolved an item that made some objects appear at the wrong place on the screen in Chinese versions of Windows XP.
Missing Report - V3Report.xml is now included.
Customer Database - Upgrading from 3.3, the location of existing Customer.MDB is now preserved.

Printing Exception
- A path that could cause an exception while printing has now been closed.

Upgrading to 3.5

The Version 3.5 MSI will upgrade all existing versions of 3.x in place.  Your preferences and settings will be retained in the upgrade.

CalMAN v3.4 Release Notes
July 3, 2009

New Features in v3.4

Pre and Post Reports
Ever since reports were first introduced in CalMAN 3.1, the most frequently requested feature has been the ability to put Before and After calibration data on the same page of a report.  Now you can.  CalMAN 3.4 includes a built-in Pre-and-Post report as well as the ability to build your own.

Quick View Mode
Many users, especially those at post-production houses, have said, “Sometimes I just want to see a few quick values.”  (For example, just Luminance, or just xy and basic data on Primaries.)  Quick View gives you a fast route to just the simple data you need.

Enhanced Work Flow
CalMAN now guides you through the process of calibrating multiple inputs.  After you finish calibrating one input, CalMAN takes you to the next input in your list.

Room Lighting Setting
The Display page now allows you to select the Room Lighting (dark room with total light control, bright room, etc.) from a drop-down menu.  The Room Lighting choice selects a default gamma option for the calibration session.

New Input Select Page
The drag-and-drop design of the old Input Select page has been replaced by a new checkbox interface.  Many users told us they found the drag-and-drop hard to perform, especially on laptops without a mouse.  The new Input select page has many improvements, including:
      ‒  Edit-in-place renaming
‒  Numeric up-down spinners for multiple instances of the same input

Hardware support

·      Added support for the CalMan Enhanced Spyder 3.  By including calibration tables in software, CalMAN transforms this meter from an uncalibrated unknown quantity to a remarkably accurate and trustworthy resource.

·       Added support for the Konica Minolta LS-100.

·       Support for updated Lumagen Radiance firmware.

·       Support for updated VP-400xx firmware.

·       Improved support for PR670.

·       Serial ports greater than 32 are now supported.

·       The Meter Refresh page now only asks you about applicable meters.

·       Added support for the Quantum Data MP500.

·       Escape key support has been added for pattern sources.

Layouts

·      You can now create layouts that always appear on their own tab.

·      The new RTF box lets you put formatted text (or any of the other objects that can be embedded in a Rich Text File) anywhere in a layout.

·      Layouts can now contain a variety of Action Objects.  Action Objects appear anywhere in a layout and can have any appearance.  (Just specify a graphics file for their image).  Actions can include navigation (Next, Back, go to named layout), meter control (Read, Read Sequence, etc.), file I/O (save data), etc.  Action Objects can contain multiple actions and conditional logic.

·      You can now create layouts with a specified subset of colors (for example, just a single color, or just the primaries) rather than having to include the whole color set.

·       You can now create read-only text fields

Charts

·         Many new chart types have been added, including:
‒  Brightness chart
‒  Contrast chart
‒  Delta RGB chart
‒  Color Balance Absolute and Scaled charts for individual colors
‒  DeltaL, DeltaC, and DeltaH for single readings.

·       Many charts now have an option to scale their axes dynamically or remain fixed at set values.

·       Single point data grids are now available, showing values for just a single read position.

·         The Bullseye chart has been enhanced to allow display of values other than the current reading.

Issues resolved, minor improvements

·     New data fields include Yr:  the ratio between luminance and target luminance.

·      CalMAN can now recommend minimum and maximum viewing distance, based on THX standards.

·      More data point options have been added, including 29 and 37 datapoints.

·      You can now switch the number of data points while retaining all existing information from readings at a different number of data points.

·      You can now specify that reports should appear normally even if your user interface has been set to blackout mode.

·      Default file storage locations have been revised to be more congruent with Vista / Windows 7 practice.  Default user data storage location is now in the user’s “Documents” folder.

·      The Treeview controls at the left of the screens have been enhanced in several ways to give a better visual indication of your position in the work flow.

·      Both the startup pages and the calibration session page now remember any screen position you move them to.

·      The Session Select page now remembers the previously selected customer.

·      Much more data is now saved in the CDF, including a section for Display values.

·      Pagination of printed reports has been improved.

·      The option for selecting the percent of stimulus to be used for Luminance values was not always honored if not explicitly set.  Now CalMAN will always follow the specified setting.

·      A race condition has been eliminated that could allow you to start one read before the previous one had completed.  (This issue was most apparent on multiprocessor systems in Verbose mode.)

·      Superfluous prompts have been eliminated in Verbose mode..

·      Previous versions of CalMAN sometimes generated a spurious warning that meter profile files were corrupt.  This message has been eliminated.

CalMAN v3.3 Release Notes
March 3, 2009

New Features in v3.3

·         We have introduced the first truly digital video pattern generator, the CalMAN DPG-1000.  CalMAN v3.3 includes code to drive the DPG-1000 efficiently.

·         CalMAN now supports automation of pattern source devices via infrared remote control, using the new USB-UIRT.   For example, CalMAN can now drive DVD players to automate a whole series of readings (the same way that CalMAN Professional automates a series of readings with a pattern generator).  Using the USB-UIRT, CalMAN sends the same code to your DVD player that you would send by pressing buttons on your remote control.  Support is built in for the most common players; a DVD Player Editor allows you to define new ones.  In addition to DVD players, video processors such as the DVDO Edge can also be automated via infrared remote control.

·         CalMAN now supports a new license type, the Enthusiast license, which offers home theater enthusiasts much of the convenience and power formerly restricted to Professionals.

·        CalMAN now remembers meters you have used before, so you don't have to Refresh to discover them again.

·        A button has been added to the About page that lets you check your CalMAN license.

Hardware support

·         Added support for the Photo Research 705/715.

·         Added support for password-protected Trichomat-1 meter.

·         A method has been added to stop a meter in the midst of a reading.  For all meters that support interruption, you can now hold down the Escape key to stop a reading.

·         Improved Chroma 5 startup speed.

·         Improved Chroma 5 low light handling.

·         Added Low Light Handling for the Konica Minolta CS-200.

·         The button handling routine has been improved for the Hubble and EyeOne Pro.

Charts

·         Data tooltips have been added to the CIE charts, the Bullseye charts, and the Grayscale Scatter chart.  Just mouse over the chart to see the measured values.

·       CIE data points have been revised to make measured vs. target values easier to see at a glance.

·       dL, dC, and DH have been added to the values you can include in a user-defined data grid.

·         Line charts now have options to scale dynamically, so readings that were formerly off the chart can now be charted.

·        Grab handles have been made larger in Design mode, making it easier to resize charts.

Issues resolved, minor improvements

·        Added support for Windows 7 (beta).

·        The default Gamma formula has been changed from ITU to Power Function.

·        Blackout mode has been improved.

·        CalMAN now gives more visible indication that you are running in simulated mode.

·         Formerly, you could not use simulated mode to restore data created with a different number of spectrum data points; now simulated mode will reconfigure itself to match the data.

·         Trying to use pattern autosense and automated patterns simultaneously does not make sense and can cause problems, but CalMAN formerly allowed you to do it; now it won't.

·         The dark calibration timer has been improved.

·        All objects on the screen now update properly when the Gamma Correction option is changed.

·         A relocation problem with the help button has been addressed.

·         An XML error that could formerly be generated by some layouts no longer appears.
